Poet Eino Leino

See and do

Eino Leino (1878 – 1926)

Eino Leino was a world traveler and an easy-going journalist. For our bohemian National Poet, freedom was the most important thing in the world. The prince of the poems, Eino Leino, was a man who’s home changed frequently.

Eino Leino regularly visited Halosenniemi and could stay in the house for days. Leino had met Pekka and Maija Halonen as early as 1895.

Leino also caused amusing situations in the garrison himself, where he went on a drug search trip at the time of the Prohibition Act. Leino wore a white coat and pretended to be Professor Kandelaber, who cared for patients. Leino examined the men who came to the front desk, gave them a sip, and wrote two weeks of recovery leave for everyone. On the same trip, Leino also visited horse stables, ordered horses into stalls according to coloring, and gave the animals oats moistened with vodka as medicine.

Leino greatly appreciated the poet J.H. Erkko, who had built his house near the death cottage of the highly esteemed author Aleksis Kivi. Leino often visited Erkkola, which was Halosenniemi’s ‘little brother’ – built by the same Halonen men.

Leino lived for a long time in the 1920s in Onnela’s boarding house in Tuusula, in the newspaper colony in Syväranta or with friends. Onnela’s boarding house is now known as Majatalo Onnela and the Lotta Museum is located at Syväranta Farm. Onnela’s Impivaara villa even has a room named Leino.
