Aleksis Kivi (1834 – 1872)

Finland’s national writer was born in Nurmijärvi, close to Tuusula. He lived in the area before the artist community was formed.

Aleksis Kivi’s works include plays, poetry and the novel ‘The Seven Brothers’, which was the first significant novel written in Finnish. In 1871 he moved to live in with his brother Alpert in Tuusula, where he died of illness aged 38. Read more about Aleksis Kivi Memorial Cottage here.
